"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" Bieler, Zoe

  • Ben Platt performing “Somewhere” from West Side Story at the Grammys
  • Tribute to composers Leonard Bernstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber
  • I love this photo for many reasons, and not just because Ben Platt is one of my favorite people. I thought that it was especially impactful because of the DACA bill that is being challenged in Congress so not only was it an incredible performance but it also had a lot of meaning behind it.  The song was sung by two immigrants from Puerto Rico who were surrounded by hate.  The immigrants now who are part of the dream program are facing that exact same thing and in Platt’s performance, it feels that he is saying that hopefully, soon those immigrants will be able to be safe and accepted, while also showing the struggle that those people go through. The photo itself is interesting because of the emotion that you can see in his performance. You cannot physically hear him sing but you can tell how bold the performance was because of his face and body language. The way the photo was taken also makes his body look outlined by light which, I feel, emphasizes how impactful his performance was.

  • This is a photo of fire photos learning that Osama Bin Laden has been killed
  • For a lot of firefighters, this news was especially meaningful because a lot of their friends and teammates were killed when they were helping people during 9/11
  • The photo is amazing because of its composition.  There are the huge letters that are stating he is dead right about all of their heads. Then there are all these firefighters looking onto it as a group which gives a sense of family and comradery. And then you see the man in the middle with his arms up and he lets everyone know exactly how those firefighters are feeling, even though you cannot see their face. The photo was also taken in New York City, where the horrible 9/11 occurred. so you know that the tensions are high because its so much more personal for those people.

  • Ja Rule and Nelly posing with a Mac at the Sprite launch party
  • There is nothing about this photo that is really amazingly interesting but in that, it creates a feeling in itself. It is such a reminder of the past that the simple straightforward photo seems totally appropriate.  It is two well-known rappers who are posing with technology which was very new at this point and they are at a sprite launch party, which is so pure. I think this photo is impactful because it represents simpler times

  • This is a photo of Brittney Spears in 2007 during her infamous breakdown
  • There are so many things about this photo that make it iconic.  Her clutching a broken umbrella while she makes a startling face at the camera sporting her bald head sets the tone for the mood of the photo.  Then the flash that emphasized her and just left her  background essentially entirely black just completes the photo and is telling of the kind of moment that was happening
  • I love this photo for many reasons.  It has become iconic in many ways, especially in memes.  There are always things that say things like, “If Brittney can survive 2007, you can survive today”.  Though it is in the context of a joke, it really is so true! She hit absolute rock bottom and 11 years later she is living her best life!  I also love the Abercrombie shorts that she is wearing because they are so 2007.  Everything about the photo is great and something really iconic that will live on forever.
