"Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" (2009)
Cinematographer: Bruno Delbonnel
Logline: As Harry Potter begins his sixth year at Hogwarts, he discovers an old book marked as "the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past.
The cinematography in all the Harry Potter movies is so emotionally provocative that it is no surprise this movie was nominated for Best Cinematography at the 2009 Academy Awards. You can see in this selection of clips, even in the very first wide shot of the alley way, the shadows cast by buildings and lighting from the sky immediately sets the tone of the whole movie. The whole movie is showcasing internal struggles each character is facing both individually and as a group and the lighting throughout the film really portrays the emotion and feelings the character is going through by putting you in the same environment as them. The low cast lighting and barely lit castles and corridors adds to the ambiance and the suspense that is building as Voldemort becomes more powerful and more of a threat. The Harry Potter movies get progressively darker and more intense as the students get older and they are faced with more challenges and more life risking tasks and the cinematography really reflects that as well.
