Person
Context: Taken by Fred Vuich for Sports Illustrated, this is
a photo of Sergio Garcia after sinking the last put that won him the 2017 Masters.
Content: This picture represents the moment every athlete
strives for. Between the pulsing veins in his neck or the obvious roar from the
crowd behind him, you can feel the excitement seeping out of this picture as
Garcia won what some consider the most elite tournament in Gold. This photo means
so much to me personally as I was there and got to witness this in person and
it was an amazing experience.
Form: I think the framing is very interesting here. The
subject is slightly right of center and there is a ton of head room but I think
in this instance it works. The extra headroom allows us to see the crowd’s
reaction to the putt as well as see Garcia’s natural reaction.
Place
Context: Photo taken by Robert Beck, this is the 2017
Masters Golf Tournament.
Content: This photo shows the landscape of Augusta National
Golf Course, although I could not find which tee it was. It also shows the monstrous
crowd that follows the tournament.
Form: The coloring of this photo is really what struck me.
The stark contrast between the dark sky against the light course matches with
the enormous crowd shows the intensity of the sport. By being at such a
distance from Jordan Spieth (lower left) he really showcased the feeling of the
tournament itself rather than another portrait of a player.
Wild Card
Context: Photo taken by David E. Klutho and this is
from the Preds vs Blues western conference semifinals.
Content: After what looks like a hard wrist shot, the Preds
and Blues players wince as they wait for the puck to hit a photographer that
was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can’t imagine how painful this was
if it hit the photographer in the hand or how much damage it caused to the
camera itself.
Form: The setup of this photo is incredible because the
framing and layout make it look as though the players and puck are posed like
this but this whole shot happened in less than a second. You can see all the
emotion on both players faces and the blurry puck in the foreground really adds
a sense of suspense to the picture.
