Gatsby is about Nick Carraway who moves to New York in search to live out the
American dream. Nick’s home ends up
being next door to the rich legend, Jay Gatsby.
Coincidently, Nick is cousins to, Daisy, the love of Gatsby’s life (she
lives across the bay from Gatsby). After
being invited to one of Gatsby’s extravagant parties, Nick and Gatsby become friends
and Nick is drawn into the crazy world of wealth and gets to see, first-hand, the
love and loss inside of Gatsby’s illusion of a lifestyle.
This green light at the end of Daisy's dock represents Gatsby's hopes and dreams to reunite with Daisy. All of the parties he would throw were in hopes that she would wonder in one night.
This light represents Daisy's ability to pull Gatsby out of the darkness he lives in. Gatsby's yearns for this; he reaches out for it and her.
The green light is a constant thing throughout the story. Though reality of Gatsby's and Daisy's current lives lessens the significance of the light, Gatsby's dream of them somehow ending up together is always there.
