Katherine Ellis- Favorite Pictures

1948 photograph by Philipe Halsman of artist Salvador Dalí

Find THREE photographs that you find compelling (good, cool, interesting or whatever that word is for you) and embed them in your post. Your sources can be from anywhere online - magazines, news articles, blog, photography contests, art websites, artist websites or.... wherever you draw inspiration from.

The "rules" are this:

- Share one photograph that tells the story of a PERSON.

- Share one photograph that tells a story of a PLACE.

- The third photograph is a "wild card" and can be your favorite (classroom and public website appropriate) photograph of anything.

For EACH photograph share:
a.  a bit of CONTEXT: where did this image come from, who shot it and what you know about it, when it was taken, etc.
b. explain the CONTENT: what the story is that is being told... either from a caption or your interpretation
c. give your understanding of FORM: explain why you think this photo is good - what about it makes it interesting and effective?
Story of a Person:

Context: This is a picture of the Boston Marathon Bombings from Patriots Day in 2013. It was taken as soon as people began helping those injured. This image is showing Jeff Bauman, in the wheelchair, who's story was recently retold in the movie "Stronger". This image became known world wide often described as  "The man with the cowboy hat helping a victim"
Content: The man with the cowboy hat, who's name is actually Carlos. Carlos came to the aid of Jeff almost immediately after the bombings occurred. The movie later reveals that these two met after Jeff healed, and his son died fighting for the US military In Iraq. Carlos had attempted suicide after his sons death, and after being unsuccessful had to attend his sons funeral in a stretcher. His second son after this killed himself. Carlos described that since his sons death, he has dedicated his entire life to helping other people, and that is why this is one on the most interesting photos to me that I have ever seen.
Form: I think that this photo really speaks for itself and gives the viewer a thousand words about it. Jeff is so incredible blood drained which is very evident, and 3 people who all look extremely different and all give off the impression that they're all complete strangers, are there helping him trying to save his life. In my opinion, the photo could not have been taken at a better time and perfectly exemplifies the horror and bravery that was present in Boston on that day.

Story of a Place:

Context: This is a picture of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. These beautiful lights are collisions between electronically charged particles from the sun that enter the earths atmosphere. The best places to watch the lights (in North America) are in the northwestern parts of Canada, Northwest Territories, and Alaska.
Content: Pictured are the Northern Lights with a view from Alaska. This is in the winter which is the best time to view them around 4am. I think that the lights in this photo are just absolutely beautiful. I can't imagine ever looking up at the sky and seeing colors like that being present. Along with the sky, the reflection off of the ice or the water is stunning. It adds so much more to the photo and makes it even more beautiful.
Form:The entire photo itself is so interesting to me. My mind can not actually process that this is what the sky looks like in some parts of the world. It has always been a dream of mine to visit Alaska to see the Northern Lights. There looks like there is contrast added to the photo to bring out the colors more, and it does an incredible job showing them.

Story of Wild Card:

Context: Pictures is Tom Brady winning his fifth Super Bowl Championship with the New England Patriots in 2017. The Patriots were down 28-3 at the end of the fourth quarter and ended up winning the game in overtime against the Atlanta Falcons.
Content: In this moment, Tom Brady is being presented the 2017 Super Bowl Championship Trophy. The confetti in the background just seems to be floating perfectly. The best part, however, is the little boy in the background.
Form: I love this photo because I love Tom Brady and the Patriots, however this photo specifically has a special place in my heart because of the little boy in the background. The idea of the fan looking up to him is exemplified both symbolically and and legitimately as he is lower than Tom and is watching him grasp the trophy for the very first time. You can tell he looks up to Brady and idolizes him and it makes the picture that much more special and enjoyable.
