Context: This picture is from the Vietnam War. I found it featured on some of the most popular images from The Vietnam War, an 18-hour documentary from Ken Burns and Lyn Novick. I am unsure of who took the photo specifically however it is safe to assume it was a photographer covering the war.
Content: The story being told through this photo is a powerful message of how war affects a country, in particular the people that live there and those that are fighting it. Just as the youths march away with what little they have left, being forced to flee, those older are marching directly opposite of them.
Form: The duality of this photo is striking to the eye. The roles could be reserved even. With the soldiers being defeated, having to flee with what little they have left, while the children march back to their homes. One thing is clear however and it is that neither side looks to be having a good time. Both sides are constantly having to move because of the fighting and chaos that is engulfing the area. It is centered directly in the middle of both groups allowing both to roughly the same amount of space aside from the size difference between the groups.
Context: This photo is of the a Vietnam bay and is shot by Natalie Fobes and taken somewhat recently though the exact date I am unsure.
Content: The story being told shows just how people live here and how the fishing market is such a vital part of the economy for this area. There aren't that many boats without their being a use to all of them. It seems overcrowded but supply and boats must equal the demand to some degree.
Form: This photo clutters the entire frame with little water being exposed and even though the shore is in the picture it is barely given any space either. This is because of the sheer amount of boats in the bay and framing the picture in this way allows the viewer to see the significance of the fishing market for this area and what it would mean to this community if something were to happen to it.
Context: At first glance would you think this is real or not? This is a screenshot from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was posted to reddit and imgur by user name narwhale111. It depicts a town overtaken by the harsh weather and abandoned to its icy fate.
Content: It is showing the ruin that weather can leave in its wake. It tells the story of how people used to live here and expanded to quite the little village until an event wiped them out making you wonder about the people that used to call it home. Did they escape? Or were they consumed by the snow along with the town?
Form: This screenshot is interesting because of the overview it gives. This image, not show in game without the use of additional editing tools, gives a proper scope of the entire village that has little in game screen time. It makes us ask many of the same questions whenever we look upon ruins in the real world. Who lived here? For how long? What did it look like before all the destruction? How did life here look like from day to day? Also would you be able to tell if it was real or not without using advanced tools? I would be willing to bet most would not.
