EDM Across Time

1980s brings:

"Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics (1983)
Directed by Dean Karr and Chris Ashbrook

Context:

Eurythmics is a group comprised of Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart. The duo released "Sweet Dreams" through the label RCA Records.

Content:

The video features many different scenes ranging from a board room with a roaming cow to an open field with people playing cellos. This whole video at the end is revealed to be only a dream of Annie Lennox, one half of Eurythmics.

Form:

Several scenes in this video are transitioned to and from each other through the use of fading, which also gives off images layering on top of one another.

Aesthetic:

There are a couple of times throughout the video where the singer is directly addressing the audience, which breaks the fourth wall. This fourth wall break helps draw the audience in and keep the attention directed to the singer.

1990 brings:

"Around the World" by Daft Punk (1997)
Directed by Michel Gondry

Context:

Daft Punk is a dance music duo comprised of two french DJs, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. This song was released under the label Virgin and went on to become one of the most successful music groups in the last several decades.

Content:

The video features five distinct groups: tall athletes, robots, swimmers, skeletons, and mummies.
Each respective group is doing a specific thing that according to the director represents a specific part of the song. In the end the five respective groups come together and dance in unison until the end of the video.

Form:

The camera circles around the entire scene, focusing at a respective group at different times in the video. Some groups are cut to, while others are merely just circled around to.

Aesthetic:

The video doesn't feature too many bright colors and has a very simplistic feel with the video ending by just simply fading to black.

2000/2010s brings:

"Toulouse" by Nicky Romero (2012)
Directed by Timo Pierre Rositzki

Context:

Nicky Romero is a Dutch DJ who is the founder of the record label Protocol. Romero is imfamous for his abstract ideas in his music videos.

Content:

The video features a group of people walking around a town in Guy Fawkes masks who recruit more and more people to go around town dancing while wearing the masks.

Form:

The video features parts in slow-mo to add to the effect that the buildup of the music creates. Specifically the slow-mo kicks in whenever a new person is recruited to the group using the mask.

Aesthetic:

Right at the Guy Fawkes mask is introduced and the first person is about to be recruited, the original man is zoomed in on and looks directly at the camera, breaking the fourth wall.
