30 Years of Pop: Going Somewhere Different

1980's Pop

Released in 1985, this video was directed by Steve Barron. The label this song and the video were released under was the Warner Bros.

The video starts with a woman reading a comic book in a cafe, in which the main character invites her to join him. She accepts and becomes part of the comic. They get chased into what seems to be a dead end, and the main character rips a hole in the wall through which she escapes and joins the real world again. She hurriedly goes back home to see what happened in the comic after she left and sees the main hero break out of his 2D world to join her.

The main technique used in this video is rotoscoping, which involves drawing over the film to animate it and in this case, bring the comic to life.

1990's Pop

Released in 1996, this video was directed by Jonathan Glazer. The label this song and video were released under was Sony Soho Square.

In the video, you primarily see Jay Kay dancing in a blue and white room with the furniture moving behind and around him.

The floor appears to move during the video, but in reality, it is the set around Jay Kay that is moving. The camera is fixed at one of the walls in a mirrored box to help the illusion.

2000's Pop

This video, released in 2003, was directed by Bryan Barber. The song and video were released under the labels RCA and LaFace.

In the video, there is a band called 'Love Below' and during the course of the video, you can see them performing on British TV in front of a live studio audience consisting of a bunch of female fans.

André 3000 plays all 8 members of the band. Each part was filmed several times from several angles. Each piece was then carefully edited together to have the seamless appearance of him in all 8 roles.
