Angel by Aerosmith (1980's)
Context- This music video was directed by Marty Callner and was released in 1988. This particular music video thrived on MTV.
Content- The music video begins with the band on stage then as the video progresses you can see different members of the band with a guitar in different settings such as on an abandoned road and a living room setting. This music video includes a scene where Stevin Tyler goes from singing on stage then travels through an eye where he is then in an alley alone singing. There also contains a scene where Steven Tyler (leas singer) grasp at an angel in his room. Towards the middle of the music video who see the band sitting in an alley and then a clip of a phantom type woman appears behind a sheet. The video ends with Steven Tyler walking back stage with a woman intended to be the "Angel."
Form- the scene going from the stage to Steven Tyler grasping at an angel all alone in his room causes a more dramatic feel which accurately represents this song.
Observations and Aesthetics- The eye was used as a tool to switch from one scene to the next which made a very dramatic portrayal. Although there are some lighter scenes within this music video, there are also a lot of parts where the lighting darker where it is trying to convey the overall dramatic vibe such as in the bedrooms or in the dark alleys. The video did a great job in portraying a sort of gloomy mood. The band came out with this song knowing it was unlike their other rock songs.
I Don't Want to Miss Thing by Aerosmith (1990's)
Context- This music video was released in 1998. This song was originally suppose to be sung by U2, but after Steven Tyler's daughter was cast into the move "Armageddon," which is where this song was featured, Aerosmith then took over the song.
Content-The music video starts off by showing videos of outpace then zooms into earth where then Steven Tyler is shown singing this song on multiple TV screens. Majority of the video contains the band on stage singing the song in a an eerie setting but it goes back and forth showing clips of outer space. It also contains some scenes from the movie "Armageddon." The song concludes with orange, bright lighting to show a dramatic ending to the music video.
Form- This music video has a very dramatic feel and this is portrayed through the dimmer lighting and the zooming in on Steven Tyler's face as he sings the song.
Observations and Aesthetics- At the beginning of the music video the scene is switched from outer space to Steven Tyler singing on multiple TV's and this is done by the camera zooming all the way in on earth then you see Steven Tyler. There is then a scene where the band is playing in a room with no one else in it. The lighting in this room is very dark which conveys a gloomy mood which is obviously what this song is trying to portrayal. The music video ends with a bright, orange lighting which brings about a happier and victorious mood.
Jaded by Aerosmith (2000's)
Context- This song was released in 2001 and was a part of the "Just Push Play" album. Steven Tyler's daughter was his inspiration for this song. This song is about a girl who has ultimately lost touch with reality. The director for this music video was Francis Lawrence.
Content- The music video starts off with a scene of an audience then zooms in to a girl on stage. It then switches over to Steven Tyler's face while he is singing. It then includes sends of people pampering this girl. The music video progresses to different scenes of people doing acrobatic tricks as if there was a circus in this girl's room. the music video concludes with the girl staring into nature and crying as if she knows she is missing out on something.
Form- This music video contains a a girl who is obviously in despair and lost. The music video does a great job in portraying this girls confusion as people are pampering and giving her what she wants such as a circus in her room.
Observations and Aesthetics- The music video starts off by showing a girl on stage but zooms in and that then switches the scene to the girl being in her bedroom. The camera quickly moves to people walking to cater to her and this dramatic turn sort of distorts the eye for a quick setting and I think this dramatic shift caught people's attention while watching the video. The overall lighting in this music video is low, yellow lighting and goes along with this music video's message it is trying to convey which is not particularly sad, but also not particularly happy. The music video ends with the girl in the woods and this is where there is very bright lighting. I think this lighting is bright because at the end of the video the girl finally comes to touch with reality so a happier tone is trying to be portrayed.
