"HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT!" Robinson, Eric

Hit Me With Your Best Shot

CONTEXT: This photo was taken at the London Fashion Week at the Ana Hindmarch show. It was the biggest fo the week. The photo displays three models on the day of September 18, 2016. It was captured by Stuart C. Wilson.

CONTENT: So the photographer behind the photo had been rejected entrance to the backstage access of the fashion show. He had the right accreditation and his name was indeed on the list, but security had run out of passes. He found a way into the show because he attended dress rehearsals and knew exactly the shot he wanted to get. With a little dedication he reached his goal.

FORM: I think what makes this photo very interesting is the depth behind it. You clearly see the foremost model, and the form of her face, but you can also see the variety of depth as the other models get further away in the background. Adding to the depth, I believe the contrast of the photo depicts it from any regular form of black and white stills.

CONTEXT: This photo was taken December 13, 2015. It was taken by Sergio Tapiro, who is from Mexico. This picture won third prize in the nature category of the World Press Photo contest. It was title The Power of Nature.

CONTENT: The Colima volcano erupted causing rock fragments to fly along with the flowing of lava. It is very common for this particular volcano to have visits of lightning when erupting. The lightning is cause from things like ashes and ice colliding creating static strong enough for visible lightning.

FORM: This photo holds great beauty. All the way from the stars in the dark sky, until the natural glow of lighting the strike of lightning gives off. I assume this had to be taken at a quick second to perfect catch the frame of perfection. The running lava adds another element of glow into the still image. If we pay a close amount of detail, the stars give off enough light to lightly define the edges of the volcano's sides.

CONTEXT: This photo was taken by SeongJoon and owned by Bloomberg. It was taken on March 16, 2017.

CONTENT: This photo shows a visitor taking a selfie on the observation deck of Lotte Corp World Tower in Seoul. I assume he was visiting from another country. He totally enjoyed the view of the city and had to capture the moment.

FORM: The image give off the great view of the city's top. The natural lighting of the city's view give off a nice defined silhouette of the visitor. The large windows create an illusion of an open space and makes the room seem bigger that what it really is.
Best Shot assignment

Person:
Context: Photo taken by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair in 2008. It is on the set of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Content: The photo shows Harrison Ford, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg in front of an elaborate set for the worst Indiana Jones movie. It is super cool to see these three incredibly influential people together and continuing something they all worked together to create decades before. They all seem very comfortable collaborating and being in an environment like this because it is absolutely nothing new to them.
Form: the colors and light seem very nostalgic to me. The photo very intentionally displays the large set in the background and it looks really cool to see those kinds of things without all the camera tricks and visual effects hiding it for the final product. It seems pretty staged to me, especially the way Harrison is standing so Harrison Fordly and leaving a window just big enough to show Cate Blanchett sitting in the background. It looks really pretty though.

Place:
Context: I don't know the details of the photographer but this is a photo of the entrance to an abandoned Wizard of Oz theme park in Beech Mountain, North Carolina. It officially closed down in the 80s but they reopen it for one weekend a year and sometimes people sneak in to explore and take pictures. Its a pretty creepy place most of the year.
Content: I looked through a bunch of pictures of The Land of Oz but I liked this one because you could see the overgrown plants, the big front gate, and the cracking and fading yellow brick road. It shows how time has worn the place down but it also doesn't just look creepy because you can still see the fun colors and can get excited for what is behind the doors.
Form: I like how the image is centered on the gates but you see them from below and a ways down the road.

Wild card:
Context: Unknown photographer but it was taken during the production of The Empire Strikes Back. It shows how the original Star Wars opening crawls were filmed before a computer could scroll through the words at that unique angle to make things easier. The camera was moved over the large plate with the text printed out on it.
Content: It's super cool to see how they did this, especially because it isn't something we would ever think twice about nowadays because it is so easy now. When they decided to do this they had to build this whole rig just to make text slide across the way they needed it too. A lot of what the special effects teams were doing for these movies was very rushed and they didn't realize they were making history so much of what they did went unrecorded except for how it turned out in the movie, so this is a rare glimpse at some of their strange methods.

"Hit Me WithYour Best Shot!" Photography Assignment

This photo was found on National Geogrphapic's "Being Jane Goodall" page. This photo was taken by photographer Hugo Van Lawick in Tanzania in 1962. This was during Goodall's first documented trip to Tanzania.

This picture shows Jane Goodall grooming a chimpanzee. National Geographic explains that "Bananas gave Jane an edge. A steady supply lured chimps and enabled her to gain their trust."

This photo has a grainy quality about it that adds to the luster of being in the jungle with these creatures, although this has more to do with camera quality of the time than it does with form. This photo shares a raw, rare and intimate moment by being on the same level as Jane and the chip, showing us their bond.

This photo was found on Condé Nast Traveler's website of 50 of the most beautiful destinations. This photograph was shot in Keukenhof Park in Holland. This photo was taken by a photographer with the last name Getty.

The photograph is captioned with "Holland is known around the world for its rainbow-hued fields of tulips, especially those located in and around Keukenhof. Millions of bulbs are planted in the park each year—visit in mid-April to see the flowers during their peak season".

This photo makes use of the brightly colored tuplis and a crystal blue sky to show the great depth in detail a landscape like this holds. The angle the picture is taken shows the vastness of fields like these and the brightness shows the intensity of the flower's colors and its contrast to the surrounding landscape.

This photo was one that I found on UNICEF's website. This photo's photographer was not listed but was shot while actress and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn was volunteering in Ethiopia in 1988.

This photo shows a side of Hepburn that many do not know. Here Hepburn is greeting girls at a UNICEF supported school while on her trip to help refugees.

This photo captured a moment of such genuineness as these children meet Hepburn in the middle of their crumbling world. This photo captures Hepburn surrounded by these young girls, showing her natural friendliness and pure joy she gets when helping others. The wide shot of this photo conveys how much Hepburn was immersed and engaged with the people of Ethiopia.

Stefon Diggs' game-winning catch against the Saints

Context: This picture was taken on January 14th in the final seconds of the NFC Divison Round game between the New Orlean Saints and Minnesota Vikings. The picture was taken by Hannah Foslien of Getty Images.

Content: On this play, with the Vikings trailing the Saints by one with ten seconds remaining, Minnesota quarterback Case Keenum threw a deep pass to wide receiver Stefon Diggs who made the catch and ran 40 yards for the game-winning touchdown with no time left.

Form: This is a great picture because it shows the Saints defender, Marcus Williams, missing Diggs and also shows how high Diggs had to jump to catch the pass. The angle the photo was taken at also makes it different and interesting.

The Henningsvær Idrettslag Stadion in Norway
Content: This is an aerial shot of the Henningsvær Idrettslag Stadion in Henningsvær, Norway. The photographer of this image is unknown but I got it from Twitter a few months ago.

Context: Henningsvær is a town of just 500 people that is used mainly as a fishing town. However, that doesn't stop the dedicated Scandanavians from getting in some soccer. The field was built on one of the islands near the town flanked by rocks and fishing cabins. This is not actually a stadium, of course, because it has no seats. It is used by the kids and players in the area and is very well maintained.

Form: This may be the most scenic picture I have ever seen. It is so serene with the ocean flanking the small islands, you have the giant mountains topped with snow in the distance, and the incredible field to complement the image. It catches anyone who looks at the image off guard as you never expect to see a soccer field somewhere like this.

Real life "Blade Runner"
Content: This picture taken by an unknown photographer was captured in Toronto, Canada over the weekend.

Context: I found this image on Twitter and I was immediately blown away by its quality and fictional look. The person who tweeted the image said it looks like a shot out of a "Blade Runner" movie and I couldn't agree more.

Form: The angle at which this picture was taken and the number of advertisements in the background immediately catch your eye. However, if you examine the image of a couple more seconds, you can see a figure crossing the street in front of car lights. The cold looking rain/snow in the sky mixed with the lights makes the image really pop. The contrast between light and dark is so extreme it doesn't look real.

Visual Inspiration

Context:

This Picture was shot by a photographer under the name Rukes. The picture is of the DJ Rezz. Rukes shot this picture on the second day of the festival, "Holy Ship!".

Content:

This picture in a sense represents what a typical Rezz show is: full of trippy and eye catching visuals that accompany dark and bass filled techno. Rezz further adds to the visuals by wearing a pair of spinning goggles that change colors.

Form:

Like stated above, Rezz's shows are filled with amazing visuals that inspire myself as a DJ and performer. She is one of few artists that go the extra route to incorporate images and colors to further capture the audience's attention. Seeing these visuals makes me want to get to a point where I can put a huge amount of effort in including pictures into DJ shows I do later on in life.

Context:

This picture is from a photographer named Jais Stanfield. This picture features Railroad Park in Birmingham. This picture has been featured in multiple magazines throughout the country.

Content:

This picture features a huge part of downtown Birmingham and a large tourist attraction also. The way the park sits right in front of the skyline of downtown makes for a beautiful sight and something that is better seen in person.

Form:

This picture is one I've seen multiple times and I love how it captures a place close to me. I'm from Birmingham and I go to railroad park at least once when I go back home for a break or a weekend. Growing up Birmingham wasn't somewhere exciting to visit, but with the addition of this park it provides a place to take my UA friends when I finally get them to go to Birmingham for a visit.

Content:

This is another picture taken by Rukes. This picture features the duo Jack U, made up of EDM giants Diplo and Skrillex.

Context:

This picture was taken on New Year's Eve 2014, at Madison Square Garden. This show was rare because it has been one of the few times an EDM show was held on NYE. The duo of Jack U provided a show that brought in the new year with party vibes and a positive vibe.

Form:

I am a huge EDM fan and Jack U is one of the artists I could listen to for hours on repeat. Skrillex and Diplo are two of the biggest names in all of music. I look up to them as inspiration for whenever I need a boost for a show or ideas for song combinations. I remember watching a live stream of this specific show and saying to myself how I want to do a show to this magnitude when I get the opportunity.

Brittany Pitts: Hit me with your best shot

"Hit Me With Your Best Shot"Photo Assignment

Context: Shot by Elena Anosova in Sibera, Russia. Won an award in the category for 'Daily Life' in the World Press Photo Awards for 2017.

Content: A picture of a hereditary hunter in a small settlement near Siberia.

Form: The photo is nice and centered, but it's also a very nice close shot of this man. I like the snow all over his face.

Context: Shot by Yana Lileeva. Won an second place in the Abstract category (in the professional division) of the Fine Art Photography Awards.

Content: This picture depicts a residential area in Moscow. They are famous for bright colors and patterns.

Form: I picked this picture because I like the symmetry. It makes it very pleasing to look at.

Context: "Between Stations" by Joshua Sariñana. This photo was taken at a train stop in Boston.  This was shot on an iPhone using the burst feature.

Content: There is a woman deeply engrossed in her phone across the tracks, and the photographer managed to capture a picture of her inbetween cars.

Form: I really liked this picture because I was blown away by the fact he was able to get such a clear picture of the woman. The bright colors and symmetry really help draw your eye to it. The additional fact that he shot it on an iPhone also blew me away and really inspired me.

Marley Blackmon- Hit me with your best shot assignment

Picture of a person:

Context: This is a picture of Kate Moss photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth. I could not find what year it was published.
Content: Kate Moss, an iconic supermodel, is drinking milk and eating food from the referigerator what appears to be late at night.
Form: I think this photo is amazing because I love fashion and Kate Moss in general but I really like how Kate is almost acting in this picture. The way she has positioned her body is like she is actually moving and caught off guard maybe by someone coming in the kitchen late at night. I also really like how this picture is almost made to be vintage with the colors and the clothing. In addition, one thing I found about the photographer was that she pushes the limits of female sexuality. I think this picture perfectly captures that.

Picture of a place:
Context: This is a picture of Santorini, Greece that I found on pinterest and I think the girl who took this picture is named Kiki Manti because she uploaded it.
Content: This is a picture of the beautiful cobblestone and white buildings in Santorini, Greece.
Form: I really liked this picture because of how beautiful Greece is. I want to study abroad there. I really like how everything is white there because white is my favorite color. I love all of the cobblestone streets and how simple but cluttered everything is.

Wild Card:
Context: This is a picture from National Geographic that was originally published in "For These Girls, Danger is a way of life" in January 2017 by Stephanie Sinclair.
Content: The story behind this picture is that this young 9 year old girl risks sexual violence everyday to make money selling flowers alone.
Form: I think this picture is really powerful. Not only is the story behind it powerful and devastating, her face is too. The rain adds to the sadness of this picture as well. I chose this because I think more people should be aware of stuff like this going on in the world instead of ignoring it or scrolling past it.

" Hit me with your best shot! "

Context: This photo was published in "Inside the hidden world of jaguars" in December 2017.
This image was taken by Steve Winter.

Content: " A 10 month jaguar cub is caught in the infrared beam of a camera trap as it returns to the safety of a tree in the Brazil's pantanal region, the world's largest tropical wetland and one of the last bastions for jaguars. "

Form: This photo is interesting to me because I though this shot was pretty unclose/epic. Im really into wildlife, and animals so I connected with this image well.

Context: This photo was published in " meet the man who's lived alone on this island for 28 years" In July 2017. This image was taken by Michele Ardu.

Content: The guy at the bottom of this image has lived on this island alone on Budelli for 28 years.

Form: Some people may think living on an island alone is depressing but there many people that actually like traveling and being alone, they tend to fin peace and happiness.

Context: This photo was originally published in, " In their words: How children are effected by gender issues," This photo was taken by Robbin Hammond. The image came for National Geographic.

Content: " The best thing about being a girl is, now I don't have to pretend to be a boy. "

Form: I chose this image because in our generation now there's a problem when a little girl is acting like boy " Tomboy " but me personally I see no wrong in a little girl playing rough like a boy.

Context: This photo was taken on May 25, 1965 just after Muhammad Ali knocked out heavyweight boxer Sonny Liston in the first round of their second Heavyweight Champion of the World meeting. Photographer Neil Leifer is credited with capturing this iconic image.

Content: As explained above, the photo was taken right after Ali knocked out Sonny Liston in their second championship boxing match. The largely anticipated boxing match was quite a disappointment to many fans around the world as they were looking forward to an extensive and entertaining match between two heavyweights. Considered one of the greatest moments in sports history, it quickly became an iconic image.

Form: This photo appeals to me mainly because many doubted that Ali could achieve such a task as he did. Personally, this image promotes determination and belief in one's self.

See the source image

Context: This photo was taken in 1950 by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt.

Content: The photo shows four immigrants who have recently arrived in Ellis Island, New York to begin their new lives as United States citizens. Their intuitive and eager looks indicate excitement for the unknown journey that awaits them. Ellis Island was a popular site of immigration intake especially during the 1950s. As many as 100 million Americans today can trace their lineage back to this very site.

Form: I chose this image because I feel as though it symbolizes opportunity and the ambition in the hearts and minds of the immigrants who traveled to the United States for a better life. This photo unquestionably depicts America as the "Melting Pot".

Context: This photo was taken in 1972 at Richard Nixon's opening to China.

Content: Here, Nixon is seen throwing up two "peace signs" which indicate his desire for smooth international relations for America amongst other nations. Given Nixon's many uncovered scandals that he had been involved in, one cannot help but question his sincerity behind this motion. It has, however, managed to become one of the most notorious photographs within the political arena and society.

Form: This photo appealed to me mainly because Richard Nixon has always fascinated me. As a political science major, I am infatuated with the idea that a man in such a high office could be as vindictive and secretive with the American public as he was.

Photography that Excites

CONTEXT: Photographed by Chris Burkad. I am unable to locate exactly when the photograph was taken or where. A reasonable guess can be made on geological features that this may be Iceland but cannot confirm this information.

CONTENT: A Land Rover Defender is pictured amongst an unusual black sand. The photograph has darker themed colors with fog coming off the water which adds texture and confusion to the photo. Light and clarity can be seen to the left and behind of the mountain. This portrays a light versus darkness theme and if you notice the car’s tracks they are coming into the photo and turning towards the light, towards the clarity. This could represent a choice, either stay where you are because it is dark and foggy and the uncertainty of what the future holds or the road ahead is troubling or you take the bold step of pushing through the uncertainty to make it into the light. A better place that holds clarity and understanding.

FORM: The simplicity of this photo allows for interpretation in any reasonable direction. Neutral colored tones bleed throughout this photo which makes it all the more simple and elegant in its own way. Instead of vibrant splashes of color that excite the eye, the photo is calming and mysterious enough for the viewer to feel engaged.

CONTEXT: Photographed by Charles Sexton in Da Nang, Vietnam. The still shot was taken on a Nikon D3400. This photo was taken while I jumped in front of traffic for a moment. While very risky, it was very much worth it.

CONTENT: Photographed is a mob of moped, bikers, and a sprinkle of cars. In Vietnam the most convenient mode of transportation is a bike. Not only is it easier to park and store while at home, maneuvering through traffic is only possible if you are riding a bike. This photo however has a deeper contextual meaning behind it. As I walked the streets of Da Nang I noticed that the streets were always packed and people where always going somewhere.

FORM: This photo represents the chaos of life. Everyone is trying to get somewhere, most speed by on bikes and weave their way through the mob of people while others sit back and take it slow and easy. Finally, few are daring enough to lead. That is why there is a small focus on the man whose face is shaded out. The biker could be anyone, man or women, old or young. Never the less they set the pace and direction for everyone else.

CONTENT: Photographed by my favorite artist Chris Burkad. This was taken somewhere interesting but there was no information about the location this was taken or when. There is a surfer in frigid water with a volcano behind him. The shot also captures the coastline of grassy fields.

CONTEXT: The photo captures the beauty of nature and how lucky we are to get to live in it. The photo has so many simple yet complex focal point about it That it is hard to choose just one to talk about. The surfer is shredding a nice wave in some frigid water with not only a majestic Hobbit like coastline behind him but a freaking frosted VOLCANO. The focus point of the surfer is small but tells a big story. From a humbling perspective I can easily view myself as the volcano and think wind bends around me because I am so mighty, but in reality I am just like that surfer dude, being tossed around by a wave  that was set in motion by God a long time before we were around.

FORM: Perfectly timed, this photo was taken while the surfer is kicking his board around while dominating the wave. Surfing photography typical just has a monster wave with someone doing their best to conquer the wave. With this photo Chris puts a unique twist on traditionally surfing photography. The wave isn’t giant but it is the setting that makes this photo different.  The color scheme runs with cool, calm, but dynamic colors that are breathtaking. This photo invites adventure and pushing one to their limits for the sake of exploration. Most people will never see something like this in their life, but this piece of art should invoke a desire to witness something this beautiful in person.

"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" - Interesting Images

Context: This picture is from the Vietnam War. I found it featured on some of the most popular images from The Vietnam War, an 18-hour documentary from Ken Burns and Lyn Novick. I am unsure of who took the photo specifically however it is safe to assume it was a photographer covering the war.

Content: The story being told through this photo is a powerful message of how war affects a country, in particular the people that live there and those that are fighting it. Just as the youths march away with what little they have left, being forced to flee, those older are marching directly opposite of them.

Form: The duality of this photo is striking to the eye. The roles could be reserved even. With the soldiers being defeated, having to flee with what little they have left, while the children march back to their homes. One thing is clear however and it is that neither side looks to be having a good time. Both sides are constantly having to move because of the fighting and chaos that is engulfing the area. It is centered directly in the middle of both groups allowing both to roughly the same amount of space aside from the size difference between the groups.

Context: This photo is of the a Vietnam bay and is shot by Natalie Fobes and taken somewhat recently though the exact date I am unsure.

Content: The story being told shows just how people live here and how the fishing market is such a vital part of the economy for this area. There aren't that many boats without their being a use to all of them. It seems overcrowded but supply and boats must equal the demand to some degree.

Form: This photo clutters the entire frame with little water being exposed and even though the shore is in the picture it is barely given any space either. This is because of the sheer amount of boats in the bay and framing the picture in this way allows the viewer to see the significance of the fishing market for this area and what it would mean to this community if something were to happen to it.

Context: At first glance would you think this is real or not? This is a screenshot from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was posted to reddit and imgur by user name narwhale111. It depicts a town overtaken by the harsh weather and abandoned to its icy fate.

Content: It is showing the ruin that weather can leave in its wake. It tells the story of how people used to live here and expanded to quite the little village until an event wiped them out making you wonder about the people that used to call it home. Did they escape? Or were they consumed by the snow along with the town?

Form: This screenshot is interesting because of the overview it gives. This image, not show in game without the use of additional editing tools, gives a proper scope of the entire village that has little in game screen time. It makes us ask many of the same questions whenever we look upon ruins in the real world. Who lived here? For how long? What did it look like before all the destruction? How did life here look like from day to day? Also would you be able to tell if it was real or not without using advanced tools? I would be willing to bet most would not.
Abbie Merker - Hit Me With Your Best Shot Assignment

Photograph of a Person

Context: This picture was used in last February's issue of the National Geographic magazine. It's an older picture that is now retired from the National Geographic website, so I couldn't identify the photographer.
Content: This photo shows modern-day Native American practicing his tribe's cultural traditions. The website gave the location as North America, I'm guessing around the Canada-American border.
Form: This photo caught my attention because it depicts a little piece of history still left in the world. As we all know, a few centuries back you could find people partaking in their own unique cultures all around the world without globalization or 21st century culture wiping out some things unique to that area. This photograph is so cool because it shows someone who still carries out his family's ancient traditions despite the modernizing world he lives in.

Photograph of a Place

Context: This photo was taken by Clane Gessel on May 11th, 2017. He took this photo in Chile, and won an award for Travel Photographer of the year by National Geographic.
Content: This photograph depicts a marble cave that was found in South America (Chile). The cave floor is made up of Ice, and the walls are solid marble.
Form: This picture stood out to me because blue is my favorite color and the beautiful shades it has to offer caught my attention immediately, but also the patterns and textures you can see in the marble walls are very stunning. I also immediately wondered where the picture was taken when I saw it. I think the way the cave opening is not directly in the middle of the picture offers symmetrical value that makes the overall photograph more inriquing.

Wild Shot

Context: This picture was taken by Paul Kane (who works for Getty Images) in Lancelin, Australia. The photo was taken on January 31st, 2018.
Content: This picture shows the rare red moon that was visible from most parts of the world a couple of hours ago. The website listed photos taken of the big red moon all around the world. One picture was taken from NYC, and you could see a faint red moon behind the statue of liberty. However, the moon looked much more dramatic in other parts of the world.
Form: This picture was so interesting to me because it was hard for me to believe it was even real. At first when I saw it, I thought it was something out of the Nightmare Before Christmas and not an actual photo. I also like how you can see that the two people looking at the moon are also trying to take pictures of it- a perfect representation of our society.

Kennedy Park
"Hit Me with Your Best Shot"
Photography Assignment

Photograph of a Person
Context: Shot by Cameron Spencer/Getty Images. Usain Bolt in the Men's 100m semi-final in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Content: Bolt is smiling back at his competitors, having complete confidence in crossing the finish line first.
Form: The photo is eye-catching because of it's motion. It is easy for the eye to follow the movement of the runners. What makes it an exceptional photo is the fact that the photographer was able to capture a surreal moment amidst all the competitive chaos of the race.

Photograph of a Place
Context: Shot by Imaginechina. Rainbow Mountains in the Zhangye National Park of Gansu, China.
Content: The Rainbow Mountains are truly one of a kind, existing only in one place on the entire planet. The stairs leading up to the platform are inviting you to climb, while the empty platform is in need of being occupied. This picture calls out to the adventurer, promising new feelings of hope and awe.
Form: This photo is remarkable because of its unity and variation. The intricate lines in the ridges of the mountains bring together the vibrant warm colors of the overall summits.

Wild Shot
Context: Shot by Sam Abell/National Geographic. Titled "Children and Pony." The Clondalkin District of Dublin, Ireland in 2009.
Content: This is my my all-time favorite photo. National Geographic captions it as: "He's quiet and easy to catch," says Lee Johnson, at left, of his pony Gypsy. Lee tends his charge in a stable behind his home in the Clondalkin district of Dublin, a metropolis where cars still dodge horse-drawn carts hauling vegetables to market." I adore the unspoken story it tells. The Irish children are latching onto their horse while intensively watching something in the distance. The uncertainty gives the mind the freedom to create an ending of its own.
Form: The starring element of the photo is its subjects. They make the photo look effortless and real. They are more concerned with their world than the one of the camera, which in this age is a rarity and novel of wonderment.
